Man Dies After Dublin Incident as Investigation Launched

A formal investigation has commenced following the death of a man in his 50s who sustained injuries during an incident at a residential property in County Dublin. The event occurred late on Thursday night, June 20, 2025, at a house located on Foxdene Drive in Balgaddy, a suburb west of Dublin city.

Emergency services responded to the scene shortly after 11:00 p.m., where James Berney, also known locally as Jake, was discovered with serious injuries. He was transported by ambulance to Tallaght University Hospital for treatment but was later declared deceased.

Following his death, the property was sealed off to allow for a technical forensic examination. The site remained cordoned off through Friday morning as investigators continued to assess the location for evidence that might clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Ongoing Garda Inquiry and Public Appeal

The investigation is being directed by a Senior Investigating Officer based at Lucan Garda Station. Authorities are awaiting the results of a post-mortem examination, which will be carried out on Berney’s body to determine the precise cause of death. The findings are expected to guide the next phase of the inquiry.

Local residents, who confirmed that Mr Berney lived at the property with his elderly father, expressed shock at the incident. Community members described him as generally well-liked and known in the area, with one referring to him as a harmless character and a familiar face in the neighbourhood.

Gardaí have issued a public appeal for assistance. They are asking anyone who may have been near Foxdene Drive between 11:00 p.m. and midnight on the night of the incident to contact authorities if they noticed any unusual activity. Road users or pedestrians who were in the vicinity and may possess video footage, including dash-cam recordings, are urged to share this material with investigators.

Anyone with relevant information is requested to contact Lucan Garda Station on 01 666 7300, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station. The investigation remains active as officers continue to gather statements and review surveillance and forensic data.
