Former Cabinet minister Mary Hanafin has expressed a strong interest in seeking the presidency of Ireland under the Fianna Fáil banner. Speaking publicly about her aspirations, she highlighted her decades of service in both local and national government as valuable experience she could bring to the role.
During an appearance on a national radio programme, Hanafin emphasized her understanding of the constitutional boundaries that shape the presidency. She acknowledged that recent officeholders have broadened the role’s influence in meaningful ways while remaining within legal limits. Hanafin believes she could continue this evolution while drawing on her extensive background in public service and community engagement.
Discussions With Party Leadership and Campaign Climate
Hanafin revealed that she has raised the topic with Taoiseach Micheál Martin, sharing her ambitions for the office. While the conversation took place, she clarified that no promises or formal decisions have been made. She underscored that although she hopes Fianna Fáil fields a candidate, the final decision rests with the party leadership.
Reflecting on previous presidential races, Hanafin described them as sometimes harsh and aggressive. However, she noted that her political record, including any past missteps, is already part of the public domain. Despite this, she remains undeterred, suggesting that transparency could work to her advantage.
