Steps Musical Here & Now Brings Hit-Filled Escapism to Dublin’s Bord Gáis Energy Theatre

Steps are bringing their hit-filled jukebox musical Here & Now to Dublin this month, with the band promising audiences a night of “pure escapism” when the show opens at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre on 23 September for a two-week run. The production, which has already earned rave reviews since debuting in Birmingham last year, takes a fresh approach by using the group’s catalogue to tell a new story rather than retracing their career.

A New Story Backed by Classic Hits

The musical unfolds in a seaside discount superstore, Better Best Bargains, following supermarket worker Caz (played by Rebecca Lock) and her friends as they navigate friendship, betrayal, and romance. It’s described as both heartwarming and comedic, with disco balls, drag queens, and a playful splash of colour capturing the band’s signature style.

Speaking at the Dublin launch, Claire Richards emphasized that the show was never meant to be a biography. “We wanted it to be a story that people could connect with, something where they see a bit of themselves,” she said. Bandmate Ian “H” Watkins added with a laugh that the larger-than-life glitter and sparkle were “just my daily routine.”

Collaboration and Creative Vision

The project is a collaboration between Steps, production company ROYO, and Pete Waterman, with Shaun Kitchener serving as writer. Faye Tozer noted that the group worked closely with Kitchener to ensure their music was woven into the storyline with a mix of sincerity and tongue-in-cheek humour. “It’s been so exciting to see how some songs have been given new twists,” she said.

Since debuting in 1997 with their dance-pop anthem 5, 6, 7, 8, Steps have become known for a string of hits including Tragedy, One for Sorrow, Better Best Forgotten, and Chain Reaction—all of which feature in the show. The band said they were deeply protective of their legacy, with Watkins stressing, “It has to come from us. It’s official, completely endorsed, and we’re so proud of it.”

Escapism and Audience Connection

For Lisa Scott-Lee, the show’s message is simple: joy. “I just want people to remember us with a smile,” she said. Watkins echoed this sentiment, noting, “The world can be dark sometimes, and this is about giving people the best night of their lives.”

While audience members may be tempted to dance along from the start, Lee Latchford-Evans joked that fans should “save it for the megamix at the end,” when the show officially turns into a party.

The band admits the inspiration came from seeing Mamma Mia! and how ABBA’s songs were transformed for the stage and screen. Asked if they’d like to see a film adaptation of Here & Now, the response was unanimous. “Yes,” Richards confirmed, while Watkins quipped, “It’s cheaper than going to Greece!”

A Lasting Connection with Fans

Now approaching three decades in the music industry, Steps continue to thrive thanks to their fiercely loyal fanbase. “That’s the reason we’re still here,” Scott-Lee said. “We have the most wonderful, dedicated fans.” Watkins added that the support has become multi-generational, with parents introducing their children to the band’s music. “It’s gorgeous,” he said—though he admitted his own kids are less impressed: “They’d rather watch KPop Demon Hunters.”
