RB Leipzig has faced significant challenges in this season’s Champions League, suffering six defeats in as many matches. Despite being placed in a tough group, they could have performed better, particularly after disappointing home losses to Celtic (3-1) and Juventus (2-3), despite having a man advantage for the final 30 minutes.
Losses to Liverpool (1-0), Inter (1-0), and Atlético (2-1) were more predictable. After a strong start to the season, their form has dropped, with no wins in November across all competitions, causing them to fall in the Bundesliga standings. Leipzig attempted a recovery in the German Cup, facing Bayern Munich and Frankfurt, and will next meet newly-promoted Holstein Kiel in the league.
Aston Villa, on the other hand, has had a better performance, although they have also faced difficulties. With 10 points and just one goal conceded, they are just outside the Champions League’s top 8, having suffered an unexpected loss to Club Bruges (1-0). They managed a solid 0-0 draw against Juventus, with goalkeeper Dibu Martinez playing a key role. However, Villa has struggled to win since October 22, suffering recent Premier League defeats to Chelsea (3-0) and Liverpool (2-0). Their upcoming matches against Brentford and Southampton are crucial for regaining form.
RB Leipzig’s injury list includes El Chadaille, Xavi Simons, Elmas, Klostermann, Raum, and Poulsen. However, returning player Schlager, as well as Openda (5 goals, 5 assists in the Bundesliga), André Silva, Sesko (3 goals, 2 assists), and Lukeba, will be available. Defenders Orban, Baumgartner, Nusa, and Haidara will also feature.
Aston Villa’s injury concerns are limited to Onana and Ramsey. They will look to goalkeeper Martinez and key players like Digne, Kamara, Watkins (6 goals, 2 assists in the Premier League), McGin, Bailey, and Tielemans to make a difference.

Both teams have shown a tendency to score multiple goals in recent Champions League matches, so a similar outcome is expected here.
