Around 500 individuals are enjoying Christmas dinner at the RDS in Dublin, an event organized by the Knights of St Columbanus. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the annual Christmas dinner for the homeless and those in need, which originally began in 1924 at the Mansion House.
Over 300 volunteers are assisting in serving a three-course meal and delivering 5,500 take-away meals to homes throughout Dublin. Vehicles including cars, vans, and mini buses have been arriving at the RDS, with volunteers from various organizations like Alone, St Vincent de Paul, Simon, Age Action, and Dublin City helping distribute meals and gift bags.
Buses are also providing transport from the city centre to the RDS for those attending. In addition to the festive meal, attendees will enjoy entertainment, featuring Irish dancers and musicians such as Liam Ó Maonlaí.
Trevor McNamara, Chairman of the Christmas Day Dinner Committee, mentioned that the event is entirely run by volunteers but noted that rising costs are challenging their ability to maintain their high standards. However, with continued support, they aim to keep providing warm, free meals to those in need on this special day.
Michael McCabe, a long-time attendee who has been part of the event for the past decade, shared that he would normally attend with his mother, who passed away last year. He expressed that his mother is with him in spirit as he celebrates Christmas.
