Over 13,570 drivers were caught speeding from late November to yesterday, including a motorist recorded at 213 km/h in a 100 km/h zone in Brownsbarn, Dublin.
During the Christmas Road Safety Campaign, which ran from 29 November to yesterday, gardaí highlighted several significant speeding incidents. One driver was detected traveling at 202 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on the N55 in Kilcogy, Co Cavan. Other notable offences included a motorist driving at 121 km/h in a 50 km/h zone in Ardcroney, Co Tipperary, and another at 144 km/h in a 60 km/h zone on the N11 in Wexford. Additionally, a driver was recorded at 203 km/h in a 120 km/h zone on the M1 in Lusk, Co Dublin.
In total, approximately 13,573 speeding offences were identified during the campaign. Gardaí also reported that 17 fatalities occurred on the country’s roads over the same period. There were 85 serious road collisions, resulting in numerous severe and life-threatening injuries.
The campaign included 9,973 garda checkpoints, leading to the arrest of 939 individuals for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Furthermore, 2,636 vehicles were seized for various offences under the Road Traffic Act. Gardaí also issued 1,311 fixed charge notices to drivers for using mobile phones while driving.
Authorities have urged all road users to exercise increased caution while driving to enhance safety.
