Galway mourns six-year-old girl killed in tragic crash

Gardaí continue to appeal for information following the heartbreaking death of a six-year-old girl who was struck by a truck while cycling near Galway city. The incident occurred just before midday on Saturday at the junction of Headford Road and Sandyvale Lawn housing estate.

Emergency services rushed to the scene, but sadly, the child was pronounced dead shortly after the collision. The driver of the oil delivery truck involved, a man in his 30s, was unharmed. It is believed the young girl lived with her family in a nearby estate.

Throughout the day, a steady stream of local residents gathered near the site of the tragedy, laying flowers, candles, and soft toys beside the Sandyvale Estate name stone. The community has been left stunned by the incident.

Several locals expressed their shock and sorrow. One woman, who lives nearby, shared how deeply the tragedy had affected her, saying she couldn’t sleep knowing a girl the same age as her own daughter had lost her life. Others emphasized the importance of showing kindness and unity in such painful moments.

Appeal for Witnesses and Camera Footage

Gardaí have issued a call for any witnesses to the crash, or road users who were in the area between 11:45am and 12:15pm and may have dashcam or other footage, to come forward. Anyone with relevant information is urged to contact Galway Garda Station at 091 538 000, the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111, or any local garda station.

Another Road Tragedy in Galway

This latest accident follows the death of 26-year-old motorcyclist Patrick De la Ruelle, who died following a collision with a car in Oranmore on Friday afternoon. Originally from Kinvara, his loss has added to what road safety group PARC has described as an extremely tragic weekend for the county.

These two incidents bring the total number of road fatalities in Galway so far this year to six — already surpassing the total road deaths recorded in the county for all of 2024.
