Scarlets Loss Shows Leinster Are Not Infallible Says Robin McBryde

Robin McBryde believes that Leinster’s recent defeat to Scarlets could ultimately benefit the team as they head into the crucial final stages of the season. Despite missing the chance to lock down top spot in the BKT United Rugby Championship after a 35-22 loss in Wales, the Leinster assistant coach sees the setback as a valuable wake-up call.

Leinster had been in dominant form before the Scarlets match, racking up 24 tries and conceding just two across emphatic victories against Harlequins, Glasgow, and Ulster. However, the Scarlets performance exposed vulnerabilities that McBryde feels could sharpen the squad’s focus.

As Leinster prepare to host Northampton Saints at the Aviva Stadium in Saturday’s Champions Cup semi-final, McBryde emphasized that the defeat has reignited a sense of urgency within the team. He pointed out that while recent results suggested a level of invincibility, the loss served as a reminder that the team must maintain intensity and consistency if they are to achieve their goals.

According to McBryde, the squad conducted a thorough review after the Scarlets game, reflecting on how they could improve. The focus now is firmly on the present moment, with no room for complacency.

Leinster Team News and Northampton Challenge

Leinster are expected to continue without Ireland lock James Ryan, who remains unavailable. However, they will be boosted by the return of RG Snyman, who missed the trip to Wales due to a dead leg. Meanwhile, Will Connors has been ruled out.

Northampton Saints, currently seventh in the Premiership, have impressed in European competition this season with victories over Castres, Bulls, Munster, and Clermont. Although they trail behind domestically, their European performances suggest they are capable of springing a surprise.

Leinster edged past Northampton in last year’s semi-final after surviving a late surge at Croke Park. McBryde warned that Phil Dowson’s side would be dangerous, praising their attacking style and the high tempo at which they operate. He stressed the importance of Leinster staying alert and anticipating the Saints’ quick, aggressive play.
