Liverpool Suspect Charged with Attempted Murder and Drug Driving

A celebratory event in Liverpool turned tragic on May 26, 2025, when a vehicle drove into a crowd during Liverpool FC’s Premier League victory parade, resulting in numerous injuries.

The incident occurred on Water Street around 6 p.m., shortly after the team’s open-top bus had passed through the area. A 53-year-old man from West Derby, Liverpool, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder, dangerous driving, and driving under the influence of drugs. Authorities believe the suspect’s vehicle gained access to the closed-off street by following an ambulance that had been allowed through to attend to a medical emergency.

 

Eyewitnesses reported the vehicle accelerating into the crowd, causing panic and injuries. Emergency services responded promptly, with Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service rescuing four individuals, including a child, who were trapped beneath the vehicle. A total of 65 people were injured, with 50 requiring hospital treatment. Eleven individuals remain hospitalized in stable condition, and two, including a child, sustained serious injuries.

Merseyside Police have confirmed that the incident is not being treated as terrorism-related and that the suspect acted alone. Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims stated that there was no prior intelligence suggesting such an event would occur. The police have urged the public to refrain from sharing distressing footage online and to provide any relevant information directly to the authorities to aid in the ongoing investigation.

Liverpool City Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram acknowledged public concerns regarding how the vehicle accessed the restricted area and emphasized the need for a thorough investigation. He noted that Water Street was not intended for vehicle access during the parade and that the area was heavily populated at the time of the incident.

The incident has elicited widespread shock and sympathy. Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed his condolences, stating that the nation’s thoughts are with those affected. He commended the emergency services for their swift response and emphasized the importance of allowing the investigation to proceed without speculation.

Liverpool FC Chief Executive Billy Hogan thanked supporters who assisted each other during the crisis and affirmed the club’s cooperation with emergency services and local authorities. Former manager Jürgen Klopp expressed his devastation over the incident, extending thoughts and prayers to those injured.

International figures, including Irish leaders, have also conveyed their sympathies. Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Tánaiste Simon Harris expressed deep sympathies to those impacted, highlighting the close ties between Liverpool and Ireland.
