An arrest is anticipated later today in connection with the tragic incident in Wexford that resulted in the death of a child.
Eight-year-old Malika Al Kattib was at home with her mother on Sunday night when a man they both knew attacked her mother. Malika sustained fatal stab wounds while trying to protect her. She was taken to University Hospital Waterford, where she succumbed to her injuries early yesterday morning. The attacker was also injured during the altercation.
The mother, an Irish convert to Islam, is currently in the hospital, as is the attacker, who is under garda protection. Neither has life-threatening injuries. The attacker is expected to be discharged later today and subsequently arrested as detectives have initiated a murder investigation.
Gardaí believe they have a clear understanding of the events and are following a definite line of inquiry. They consider the incident to be confined to the individuals involved and are not seeking anyone else in connection with it.
Authorities are also concerned about the spread of disinformation and misinformation online by groups with anti-immigrant and far-right views. These groups are attempting to exploit the incident to incite fear and promote anti-migrant sentiments. Gardaí emphasize that this case is not related to international protection, as the main suspect is a long-term UK resident, not an asylum seeker.
The New Ross Educate Together National School, where Malika was a student, expressed deep sorrow over her death, calling it a terrible tragedy. The school has activated its critical incident plan to support both staff and students, with assistance from the National Educational and Psychological Service. The school is also providing guidance to parents and guardians on how to best support their children during this difficult time.
