Paddy Hill, who was wrongly convicted in connection with the IRA bombings in Birmingham in 1974, has passed away at the age of 80. Hill was one of the six men from Northern Ireland who became known as the Birmingham Six after being sentenced for the bombings, which claimed the lives of 21 people in two city center pubs in November 1974.
The Birmingham Six spent nearly two decades behind bars before their convictions were overturned in 1991. The Miscarriages of Justice Organisation (MOJO) shared the news of Hill’s death in a Facebook post, confirming that he passed away peacefully at home this morning.
MOJO expressed their condolences to Hill’s family and asked for privacy during this difficult time. Hill, who founded the organization in 2001, dedicated his life to helping others affected by miscarriages of justice.
Currently, three of the Birmingham Six remain alive: Gerry Hunter, John Walker, and Billy Power. Hugh Callaghan passed away in 2023, and Richard McIlkenny died in 2006.
