Paula Canty honored as ‘artistic and gentle’ at funeral mass

The funeral mass for Paula Canty, a 31-year-old mother of two who was tragically murdered and discovered in her apartment in Mallow, Co Cork earlier this month, highlighted her kindness, creativity, and the joy she brought to those around her. Held at St John the Baptist Church in Kinsale, the service offered heartfelt tributes to her life and legacy.

Fr Robert Young, who led the requiem mass, expressed the profound sorrow shared by all, emphasizing the unique grief of losing a child. He acknowledged the immense pain felt by Paula’s family, stating, “No parent should have to endure the loss of a child, let alone experience the tragedy of their child’s murder. Your heartbreak is unimaginable, and today we recognize and share in your sorrow.”

Fr Young spoke warmly about Paula’s character, describing her as a kind, gentle, and likable person with a talent for creativity. He mentioned her love of cooking and her artistic abilities, which provided her solace and joy. On behalf of the parish, he extended his deepest sympathies to Paula’s family and friends.

During the mass, offertory gifts symbolizing Paula’s life and passions were presented by her children, Alyisha and Aoibhe, alongside her siblings, friends, uncle, and cousin. These included her artwork, a cookbook reflecting her love for cooking, family photos, a make-up set, a tracksuit, and flowers, which represented her aspirations as a florist.

Following the service, Paula was laid to rest in St Patrick’s Cemetery in Nohoval. The community mourned the loss of a young woman whose life was tragically cut short just days before her 32nd birthday.

Paula’s body was found in her upper-floor apartment on Bridewell Lane in Mallow on January 3. Joe Butler, a 42-year-old man from The Belfry in Mallow, has been charged with her murder.
