A woman in her 50s was found dead in a field in Co Roscommon on Thursday, leading to the seizure of two cars and the cordoning off of a house in Athlone. Gardaí are investigating whether the woman may have met with foul play.
The body was discovered in Curraghaleen, near the Co Westmeath border. Flowers were placed at the scene, and Gardaí had been conducting a search for several days as part of a missing person investigation. Mirjana Pap, a Croatian national living in Athlone, had been reported missing in the early hours of Saturday morning, prompting concerns from both her family and Gardaí.
The missing person appeal was called off yesterday after the body was found. It was removed from the site and transported to University Hospital Galway, where a post-mortem will be conducted by the Deputy State Pathologist.
Mirjana Pap had lived in Athlone for several years and was well-known in the local community, where she worked. One acquaintance described her as deeply devoted to her family, noting that they were her primary focus in life. A GoFundMe page has been created to assist with funeral costs, raising over €16,000 since its creation.
As part of the ongoing investigation, Gardaí have sealed off a house in Athlone and seized two cars for forensic analysis. A senior officer has been assigned to lead the case, and an incident room has been set up at Athlone Garda Station. A family liaison officer is also providing support to Mirjana Pap’s family.
Gardaí are urging anyone with information to come forward and contact Athlone Garda Station, the Garda Confidential Line, or any local Garda station.
