A 45-year-old man has been brought before the courts in connection with a deadly road collision in Dublin that claimed the lives of a husband and wife on St Stephen’s Day.
John Halpin, residing at Whitestown Avenue, Blanchardstown, faced Dublin District Court this morning. He is charged with four offences, including two counts of dangerous driving causing death.
Georgina Hogg Moore, aged 39, and her 40-year-old husband, Anthony Hogg, were struck by a vehicle near Blanchardstown Shopping Centre last Thursday evening.
Ms. Hogg Moore was pronounced dead at the scene, while her husband, who was seriously injured, later died at Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown. The couple is believed to have had two children.
In addition to the charges of dangerous driving causing death, John Halpin is also charged with two counts of hit-and-run, including failing to offer assistance. Garda Alan Murphy testified that he arrested John Halpin at Blanchardstown Garda Station shortly after 10pm on St Stephen’s Day. He stated that Halpin made no reply when the charges were read to him.
Solicitor Damien Coffey informed the court that no bail application would be made at this time and that his client did not require medical attention.
Judge Michele Finan granted legal aid and remanded John Halpin in custody, ordering him to appear at Cloverhill District Court on Friday, January 3. A woman previously arrested in connection with the investigation has been released without charge.
