Former Pilot Remanded Over €10 Million Drug Seizure in County Clare
A 62-year-old man, previously employed as a pilot with Ryanair, has been formally charged following the discovery of cannabis with an estimated street value exceeding €10 million. The accused, Brendan O’Meara, who resides at An Tulach, Summer Hill in Meelick, County Clare, appeared before a special sitting of Ennis District Court on Saturday afternoon.
Authorities allege that the seizure occurred on Wednesday, May 7, at Mr O’Meara’s address. He is facing charges of possession of a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of sale or supply. According to statements provided in court, the defendant did not make any comment when arrested, charged, and cautioned by gardaí.
Inspector Ronan McMahon, speaking on behalf of the State, requested that Mr O’Meara be remanded in custody pending further direction from the Director of Public Prosecutions. Defense solicitor Tara Godfrey informed the court of her intention to seek bail for her client, but this was met with immediate objection from gardaí.
Sergeant Rob Sheehy explained that the prosecution viewed Mr O’Meara as a significant flight risk. He added that additional and more serious charges may be forthcoming as the investigation develops. The court was told that the accused had already surrendered his passport, three pilot licences, and returned both his Dublin Airport identification and Ryanair crew credentials. In an effort to secure bail, a family member was prepared to provide an independent surety along with a bail bond amounting to €177,000.
Despite these assurances, Judge Marie Keane declined the bail request. She emphasized the magnitude of the drug seizure, characterizing it as a substantial consignment with a street value in excess of €10 million. The judge said that the seriousness of the charges and the possibility of further indictments, combined with the State’s assessment of the flight risk, warranted continued detention.
Mr O’Meara has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear again before Ennis District Court on Wednesday, May 14. The case remains under active investigation, with law enforcement expected to provide updates as further details emerge.
