Colin Farrell and Andrew Scott are competing against each other at the Golden Globe Awards taking place tonight in Beverly Hills, California. Both Dublin natives have been nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series, Anthology Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television. Farrell is recognized for his role in The Penguin, while Scott is nominated for his portrayal in Ripley.
Notably, Paul Mescal (Gladiator II) and Saoirse Ronan (Blitz, The Outrun) were not nominated in the acting categories for this year’s awards, which often provide insight into potential Oscar outcomes. Despite its success at the British Independent Film Awards and several Bafta longlist mentions, the music biopic Kneecap was not nominated for Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language.
The awards ceremony is set to take place tonight at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, where winners will be chosen by 334 entertainment journalists from 85 countries. RTÉ Entertainment will provide full coverage of the event overnight.
This year, Emilia Pérez, a film about a Mexican drug lord who undergoes gender transition, received ten nominations. Ariana Grande earned her first-ever Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical for her role as Glinda in Wicked. She will face competition from Selena Gomez and her co-star Zoe Saldana, both nominated for Emilia Pérez.
Cynthia Erivo, Grande’s co-star in Wicked, is also in the running for Best Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical, alongside Zendaya (Challengers), Karla Sofia Gascon (Emilia Pérez), Demi Moore (The Substance), and Mikey Madison (Anora), who has gained recognition for her breakout role.
The film The Brutalist, starring Oscar-winner Adrien Brody as a Hungarian Jewish architect who survives the Holocaust, leads the nominations with seven, while the papal drama Conclave has six nods. Anora, about a young sex worker who marries a Russian oligarch’s son, has five nominations, alongside The Substance.
In television, the comedy-drama The Bear leads with five nominations, followed by Shōgun and Only Murders in the Building, both with four.
The ceremony will be aired on RTÉ2 on Monday night at 9:00 pm.
