A member of An Garda Síochána was killed on duty during a road safety checkpoint in Lanestown, north County Dublin, early Sunday afternoon. Garda Kevin Flatley, aged 49 and a member of the Roads Policing Unit, died after being struck by a motorcyclist at approximately 1:00 p.m. while operating a speed control point along the R132.
The incident also resulted in serious injuries to the motorcyclist, a man in his 30s, who was transported to Beaumont Hospital for urgent medical treatment. His condition has been reported as serious, with medical teams continuing to monitor his status.
Gardaí and emergency personnel responded promptly to the scene, securing the area and launching a full investigation. The road remains closed to traffic as forensic and technical teams conduct their examinations. Diversions have been established, and authorities have requested the public’s cooperation as the inquiry proceeds.
