Just 24 hours after capturing gold in the 100m backstroke at the World Aquatics Junior Swimming Championships, rising Irish talent John Shortt was back in action in the 50m backstroke — and once again booked his place in a final.
Strong Progression Through the Rounds
The 18-year-old Galway swimmer impressed early on Thursday, finishing third in his morning heat with a time of 25.60 seconds. That performance placed him seventh overall, comfortably earning him a spot in the semi-finals.
Later in the day, Shortt returned to the pool and improved on his earlier time, touching the wall in 25.36 to secure fifth in his semi-final. His effort was enough to advance to Friday’s final, where he will line up once again against the world’s best juniors, qualifying seventh overall.
Ireland’s Lone Representative in Romania
Shortt is the sole Irish competitor at this year’s championships, which are being held in Otopeni, Romania. Despite carrying the flag alone, he has already made a huge mark on the competition with his performances.
His campaign is not yet finished — the teenager is also scheduled to race in the 200m backstroke. The heats take place on Sunday morning, with the final set for later that day, offering him another chance to add to his medal tally.
A Golden Start
On Wednesday, Shortt stunned the field in the 100m backstroke, storming to victory in 53.86 seconds. His winning time was just 0.13 seconds outside Shane Ryan’s Irish senior record, underlining the potential of one of Ireland’s brightest young swimmers.
With a gold medal already secured and another two finals ahead, Shortt has established himself as a standout performer at these championships and a name to watch as he continues his journey towards senior international success.
