Justice Minister weighs public inquiry into Shane O’Farrell case

Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan has informed the family of Shane O’Farrell that he is still deliberating on the possibility of initiating a public inquiry into the case. Shane O’Farrell, a 23-year-old law graduate, was tragically killed in a hit-and-run incident in 2011 near his home in Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan. The driver, Zigimantas Gridziuska, had multiple prior convictions and was on bail at the time of the incident.

Despite the Dáil passing motions in 2018 and 2024 calling for a public inquiry, a scoping exercise recommended against it. Minister O’Callaghan, who had previously supported the call for an inquiry, now faces the challenge of balancing these recommendations.

The O’Farrell family continues to advocate for a public inquiry, emphasizing unresolved issues related to bail breaches and the execution of warrants. They argue that addressing these concerns is crucial for public safety and justice.
