Man in 30s Questioned Over Assault on Two Off-Duty Gardaí

Gardaí are continuing to interrogate a man in his 30s who was arrested in connection with the assault of two off-duty gardaí in Dublin city centre early yesterday morning.

The incident, which took place around 1:30 am at the intersection of Dame Street and Eustace Street, has prompted an intensive investigation. The suspect is being held at a Dublin garda station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

Both officers sustained injuries during the assault. One of the gardaí, in his 40s, remains in critical condition at Beaumont Hospital. The other officer was treated at St James’s Hospital and later released.

Sources within the gardaí describe the attack as unprovoked, occurring while the two men were heading home after a night out. Authorities have conducted a forensic examination of the scene and are reviewing CCTV footage for additional clues.

Social Democrats TD for Dublin Central, Gary Gannon, expressed concerns about the safety of the city centre, describing it as a hostile environment. He attributed the increase in assaults to a reduced garda presence and noted that the derelict buildings contribute to a sense of insecurity.

Speaking on RTÉ’s “The Week in Politics,” Labour TD for Dublin South-West, Ciarán Ahern, emphasized the need for more visible policing, akin to other European cities. He also suggested promoting city centre residency to improve the area’s safety.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses, especially those who may have mobile phone or dash-cam footage from the Dame Street/Temple Bar area between 1 am and 1:45 am yesterday, to come forward.
