Man Dies After Serious Incident in Dublin, Ombudsman Launches Investigation

A 51-year-old man who sustained critical injuries during an incident in Dublin city centre last week has died.

The event occurred on O’Connell Street in the early hours of Friday, 15 August, near the Holiday Inn hotel. Authorities confirmed that the man was seriously injured during an interaction involving gardaí before he was taken to hospital, where he later passed away.

Independent Inquiry by Police Ombudsman

The matter has been referred to Fiosrú, the Office of the Police Ombudsman, which will carry out an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Gardaí made the formal referral in line with oversight procedures.

Stake

Fiosrú’s on-call team of investigators attended the scene shortly after the incident, and a spokesperson confirmed that the body has been in contact with the man’s family. A dedicated officer has now been appointed to oversee the case as the investigation progresses.

Appeal for Witnesses and Dashcam Footage

As part of its inquiry, Fiosrú is appealing for members of the public to come forward with any relevant information. In particular, investigators are seeking witnesses or motorists who may have been in the area at around 4:15 a.m. on Friday, 15 August.

They are especially interested in dashcam footage from passing vehicles, including taxis, or any mobile recordings taken near the Holiday Inn on O’Connell Street at the time.
