Man jailed for human trafficking and running prostitution ring

A 71-year-old man has been handed a seven-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to a string of serious charges that included human trafficking, supplying heroin, and controlling prostitution. Oliver James MacCormack, formerly of Moore Park in Newbridge and now residing at Maghaberry prison, admitted to 40 offenses involving the exploitation of young women, some of whom were just 17 years old at the time of the abuse.

The crimes were heard at Belfast Crown Court, where Judge Gordon Kerr described how MacCormack used drugs—particularly heroin—as a tool to control and coerce his victims. By ensuring they became addicted, he made them reliant on him for their next fix, and in return, pushed them into sex work. MacCormack arranged meetings with clients, transported the women to locations, and engaged in sexual acts with them himself.

The court learned that MacCormack not only manipulated these women through addiction but also used threats and intimidation to maintain control. He was further convicted of perverting the course of justice and witness intimidation. One of the victims has since died, highlighting the severity and long-term trauma of his actions.

The sentencing followed an investigation by the Police Service of Northern Ireland’s modern slavery and human trafficking unit. Other men connected to the case have already received convictions. As MacCormack was led out of court, several victims and family members shouted abuse from the gallery—a moment of raw emotion that underscored the suffering inflicted by his actions. MacCormack remained unmoved and did not respond.
