Man Killed, Child Injured in Shooting as Investigation Launched

Authorities are conducting a full investigation following a shooting incident at a supermarket in County Carlow on Sunday evening that resulted in the death of one man and injuries to a child. The event took place around 6:15 p.m. at the Tesco store located within the Fairgreen Shopping Centre.

Initial reports suggest that a man discharged multiple gunshots inside the premises before sustaining fatal injuries. Gardaí believe the wounds were self-inflicted. The exact circumstances leading up to the shooting remain under review.

A young boy present at the scene received minor physical injuries. Emergency medical personnel provided immediate care at the location, and the child was later released into the custody of family members. Authorities confirmed the injuries were not life-threatening.

Security Measures and Ongoing Investigation

Following the incident, the shopping centre was evacuated and the surrounding area was cordoned off by Gardaí to facilitate an extensive security sweep. A wider inspection of the area is also being carried out to ensure public safety.

The Army Bomb Disposal Team was dispatched as a precaution due to concerns that the deceased may have been in possession of an explosive device. Until the site is declared safe, the removal of the man’s body will remain on hold.

Gardaí have confirmed that there is no ongoing threat to the public stemming from this incident. They have issued a request for members of the public to refrain from circulating any recordings of the event on social media platforms. Instead, they are asking that any such footage be shared directly with Carlow Garda Station to assist in the investigation.

An appeal has also been made to witnesses or anyone with relevant information to come forward and assist the authorities as they work to establish the full facts surrounding the incident.
