Met Éireann Warns of Storm Bert Blizzard, Urges Plan Cancellations

Met Éireann has issued a Status Orange rain warning for Cork, Kerry, and Galway due to the impending arrival of Atlantic Storm Bert on Friday night.

The agency has indicated that the storm will bring heavy rain over a short duration, with the warning in effect from 12am to 10am on Saturday. This intense rainfall, coupled with high winds, is expected to cause surface and possible river flooding, leading to very difficult travel conditions.

Weather Alerts Ireland has also cautioned about the potential for significant flooding in some regions. They forecast that Storm Bert will hit on Friday night, continuing through the weekend, and bring substantial rainfall, with up to 100mm of water expected in higher elevations in the South West and West.

Today’s snowfall, combined with the forecasted rainfall, heightens the risk of flooding. Areas that typically flood, such as Bantry, Dungarvan, and Kenmare, should be especially vigilant. The Red Warning Criteria is set at 80mm of rainfall in 24 hours, and while the heaviest rainfall is expected in higher areas, the runoff combined with snowmelt could cause downstream flooding.
