Murder probe launched after woman’s body found in Cavan

The murder of a woman whose body was found at a rural house near Ballyconnell has launched an investigation by the Cavan Garda. Gardaí attended a seriously serious incident approximately at 9:30 PM on Saturday night, January 11, 2025. The deceased woman was a native woman, currently in her 50s.

The Kilnavart area property has been sealed off for forensic examination. The woman’s body was removed to Cavan General Hospital, where a post-mortem examination will be carried out to establish the cause of death.

The man, in his 30s, is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, at a Garda station in the Cavan Monaghan Division in relation to the investigation. A second male also arrived at the scene and was transported to the hospital with serious injuries.

Gardaí are appealing for anyone with information in relation to the incident to come forward, in particular anyone who may have been in the Kilnavart area between 8:00 PM and 10:00 PM on the night in question. They also want to hear from any witnesses or people who can provide relevant dashcam or CCTV footage. People can contact Ballyconnell Garda Station, the Garda Confidential Line, or any Garda station.

Understandably, this tragedy has shocked the local community. Ballyconnell, which is normally quiet, is now at the centre of one of the biggest criminal investigations ever seen. Local representatives expressed their sympathy to the family of the victim and called for anyone who might be able to help to cooperate fully with Gardaí in their investigation.

Gardaí said the investigation is ongoing and no further information is available at this time. They requested that the family of the deceased be granted privacy and left alone at this tragic time.

This incident follows another recent case in County Cork, where a murder investigation was launched after the body of a woman in her 30s was found in her apartment. The events have also sparked concerns for safety and a call for increased vigilance within the community.

However, residents are reminded to be vigilant in these areas besides reporting any suspicious happenings to the relevant authorities. Such acts of co-operation and civic support are considered essential in working alongside Gardaí in terms of investigations that involve the safety of citizens.
