Met Éireann has issued a Status Orange snow and ice warning for five counties, predicting significant snowfall starting early Thursday morning. The warning applies to Clare, Cork, Limerick, Tipperary, and Waterford, and will be in effect from midnight Thursday until noon.
This weather alert follows an incident in Northern Ireland, where a school bus left the road in County Fermanagh. Thankfully, all eight pupils aboard the bus escaped uninjured. The accident occurred on Tattygar Road near Lisbellaw.
The snowfall and icy conditions are expected to create hazardous travel, poor visibility, and potential disruptions to public transportation. In addition, the freezing weather could cause difficulties underfoot and affect animal welfare.
A broader Status Yellow warning for snow and ice will affect all of Munster, as well as Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Offaly, Wexford, Wicklow, and Galway, starting at 9pm Wednesday and lasting until noon on Thursday. The impacts in these regions include dangerous travel conditions, poor visibility, and possible disruptions to outdoor events.
Additionally, a nationwide Status Yellow warning has been issued for low temperatures and ice, with snow expected in southern areas. This warning is in effect from 8pm Wednesday until 10am Thursday. Temperatures are expected to fall as low as -4°C, leading to widespread frost and icy conditions, particularly in Munster, where snow accumulations are likely.
The weather is expected to become milder and more unsettled over the weekend.
